Vandalia students raise funds for Special Wish Foundation

VANDALIA — Each year, 4th and 5th-grade students at Smith Middle School participate in penny wars, a friendly competition to raise money for the Special Wish Foundation. This year a read-a-thon was added and raised an additional $4,500.

Smith students were able to break the record set last year by raising $10,459.40.

The Special Wish Foundation will be able to grant three wishes with the contribution. This raises the amount that Smith has donated to over $60,000.

This collaboration began in 1987, when Rose Chin’s 5th-grade class decided that instead of exchanging gifts they would adopt a charity. Word spread to local businessman Bob Crotty, who offered to match the amount the students raised each year.
